Preston like many a cotton town was blessed, or cursed, with hundreds of public houses. Many were no more than glorified front parlours that traded under the name of beerhouses, whilst others afforded the comforts of the day to those who stopped to quench their thirst etc, etc, etc, etc

In nineteenth century Preston there were at one time no less than 460 public houses or beerhouses. Few were the terraced rows that didn't have an alehouse at his corner etc, etc, etc
