This latest collection of true tales are from the length and breadth of old England. A country far removed from the present day society, a time when crime was controlled by fear and the hangman's noose was the ultimate deterent.
This catalogue of crime and catastrophy mirrors a society in which rich and poor strove for survival in their own way. The divisions in class were pronounced, and poverty was prevalent amongst the working classes who lived in squalor and suffering.
The hangman toured the Assizes courts held throughout the land and was ready for a few shillings to launch the convicted into eternity. Punishment was severe and forgiveness was rare. If the convicted were spared the noose then it was likely that a transportation ship was waiting to take them in irons to some far away place.
Many of the tales recalled shocked not only the local community but the nation. Some events brought sympathy and sorrow, whilst others brought forward feelings of shock and horror.
Enjoy your journey into the past and reserve your judgment until you have learnt of the circumstances that surrounded the terrifying and traumatic occurrences.
